Apple Settles Siri Class Action Lawsuit for $95 Million

In January, Apple reached a settlement agreement of $95 million concerning a class action lawsuit initiated over allegations that Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, was eavesdropping on private conversations.

Background of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit, titled Lopez v Apple Inc., was launched in December, claiming that Siri unintentionally activated during confidential discussions, capturing audio that was later shared with third parties. Plaintiffs in the case reported instances where they received targeted advertisements related to discussions they believed were private, including topics about specific brands and medical treatments.

Previous Accusations Against Siri

This legal action is not the first instance in which Siri has been accused of inappropriate listening. In 2019, a whistleblower revealed that contractors evaluating Siri’s functionality could access sensitive recordings, which included everything from illegal transactions to intimate conversations, as reported by The Guardian.

Settlement Terms

Apple, while denying any wrongdoing, opted to settle to alleviate ongoing litigation concerns. An Apple representative stated that “Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose.” Eligible claimants—owners of Siri-enabled devices—can receive up to $100, depending on the number of eligible devices they own, with a cap of $20 per device.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a payout, device owners must have experienced unintended activations of Siri during private conversations. Eligible devices purchased and used between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, include:

• iPhone
• iPad
• MacBook
• Apple Watch
• iMac
• HomePod
• Apple TV
• iPod touch

This settlement applies to users in the United States only.

How to Submit a Claim

If you believe you qualify for a portion of this settlement, claims must be submitted by July 2, 2025. Notification methods may include emails or postcards containing a Claim Identification Code for those eligible. For others, details can be submitted through the case’s official website, specifically on the Submit Claim page.

The claims process requires providing personal identification information, such as:

• Name and Address
• Email associated with your Apple ID
• Proof of purchase or serial number and model of the device

Claimants must attest that they experienced at least one unintended activation of Siri during a confidential conversation within the specified timeframe.

Final Approval Hearing

The total amount received per device may vary based on the volume of valid claims received. A final hearing scheduled for August 1, 2025, will assess whether the settlement distribution is “fair, reasonable, and adequate.”
