Tory Lanez Hospitalized Following Inmate Attack in California
Date: October 2, 2023
Incident Details
On Monday morning at approximately 7:20 a.m. local time, rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was hospitalized after an attack by another inmate at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. A spokesperson confirmed the incident to ABC News.
Prison staff responded swiftly, activating 911 services and administering medical aid before Lanez was transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment.
Legal Context
Currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion (Megan Pete) in July 2020, Lanez’s conviction on December 23, 2022, was for three felony charges related to the incident, where he injured her feet.
Lanez faced initial charges in October 2020 for assault with a semi-automatic firearm and possession of an unregistered firearm, which later expanded to include discharging a firearm with gross negligence ahead of his trial.
Current Condition and Investigation
Specifics regarding the nature of Lanez’s injuries have not been disclosed, and his legal representative, Crystal Morgan, stated she is “in the dark” about his current health status. As of Monday afternoon, he remains hospitalized.
The Kern County District Attorney’s Office and the prison’s Investigative Services Unit are conducting an inquiry into the attack, and the Office of the Inspector General has also been notified.
Trial and Sentencing
Lanez, who did not testify during his trial, has consistently claimed his innocence through various social media channels. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented a statement from Megan Thee Stallion, emphasizing the profound impact of the shooting on her life.
“He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma,” she stated, urging for the full repercussions of his actions to be enforced.
Following his sentencing, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge denied Lanez’s request for bond on September 14, 2023, as his legal team appeals the 10-year sentence.
