Tim Baltz Discovers Pole Dancing in ‘The Righteous Gemstones’
As the fourth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones approaches its premiere, Tim Baltz is set to surprise audiences with an unexpected new skill: pole dancing. His character, BJ, who is married to Judy Gemstone, will be showcasing this novel hobby throughout the upcoming season.
Training for the Role
During an interview with Variety, Baltz shared just how extensively he trained for this role. “I did most of my own stunts,” he remarked at the show’s premiere in Los Angeles. His pole dancing preparation was rigorous, involving three training sessions weekly, each lasting approximately two-and-a-half hours. Once he became comfortable with his routines, he refined his practice to shorter sessions every other day.
Expert Guidance
Baltz’s training was directed by Tanya Christopher, the president of the U.S. Aerial Federation, who has been influential in advocating for pole dancing’s inclusion in the Olympics. “I was essentially getting trained by the Olympic coach if pole dancing were to get in the Olympics, and she was incredible,” he explained, highlighting the significance of his training.
A Strong Foundation
Preparation for pole dancing started even before Baltz touched a pole. David Gordon Green, the executive producer and director of the series, advised him to begin Pilates to build the necessary core strength for the physically demanding skill.
Impact on Co-Stars
His commitment to mastering pole dancing has impressed his co-star Edi Patterson, who portrays Judy Gemstone. “I’m so blown away by what Tim ended up being able to learn to do,” Patterson noted. She also explored pole dancing but ultimately found it challenging, stating, “The storyline ended up changing, and honestly, I was like, thank God,” in reference to her own experience.
Character Development Through Dance
Baltz believes that BJ’s pole dancing is more than just a physical act; it serves to convey deeper aspects of his character. “He’s trying to show his elegance, but also his power because he has a different kind of masculinity, one that’s rooted in being very loyal, fiercely devoted to his wife despite all the trials and tribulations that they go through,” he explained. This nuanced portrayal adds another layer to BJ’s character, fostering a more progressive representation of masculinity.
As fans await this new season, they can anticipate not only humor and drama but also the unique flair that pole dancing brings to the storyline.
