Sharon Lokedi Sets New Boston Marathon Record
In a historic performance at the 129th Boston Marathon, Kenyan runner Sharon Lokedi, aged 31, shattered the course record, finishing the race in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds. This remarkable achievement came during the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
Lokedi’s victory was particularly poignant as she outpaced two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri in the final mile, a significant turnaround after narrowly losing to her in last year’s race, which featured one of the closest finishes in Boston Marathon history.
Remarkable Finishing Times
With her new record, Lokedi finished 19 seconds ahead of Obiri and improved upon the previous Boston record set by Buzunesh Deba in 2014 by over 2½ minutes.
This win marks Lokedi’s second major marathon title, following her victory at the 2022 New York Marathon.
Top American Finishers
In addition to Lokedi’s triumph, Jess McClain claimed the title of the top American woman in the race, finishing in seventh place with a personal best time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 43 seconds. Annie Frisbie followed closely behind, securing eighth place with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 21 seconds.
