West Virginia’s Coach Rodriguez Sets TikTok Dance Ban for Players

In an effort to foster a culture of teamwork and focus, Rich Rodriguez, the head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers football team, has issued a directive regarding players’ social media presence. He encourages dedication on the field while asking players to refrain from posting dance videos on TikTok.

Focus on Team Over Individual Display

Rodriguez, who is embarking on his second term with the Mountaineers, addressed the trend among athletes to share dance videos on TikTok, stating, “They’re going to be on it, so I’m not banning them from it. I’m just banning them from dancing on it.” He expressed concern that such activities present a less serious image of the program.

Highlighting the societal shift towards promoting individualism over team collaboration, Rodriguez believes this rule will help shift the focus back to what truly matters: success on the football field.

Player Engagement with Social Media

Dance challenges on TikTok have gained popularity among athletes across various platforms, with figures like Travis Hunter, Ashton Jeanty, and Dylan Raiola leading by example. Rodriguez, however, emphasizes that while players may engage with social media, their primary focus should be on athletic performance.

Rodriguez’s Perspective on the Future

Rodriguez articulated that he has the right to set these guidelines for his team, asserting, “I’m allowed to do that. I can have rules.” He pointedly remarked on societal behavior, joking that individuals can engage in leisurely activities, such as watching TikTok in their pajamas, when they’re no longer competing.

For now, the coach hopes that the team’s energy will be directed towards winning games rather than diverting attention to social media accomplishments. “How about let’s win the football game and not worry about winning the TikTok?” he concluded.
