Putin Declares Temporary Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed an “Easter truce,” suggesting a halt to military operations in Ukraine. The ceasefire is set to begin at 6 p.m. local time and extend until midnight on April 21.

Putin’s Statement and Assumptions

In a statement released via the Kremlin’s Telegram channel, Putin expressed hope that the Ukrainian forces would reciprocate this gesture. However, he cautioned that Russia would respond to “violations of the truce and provocations” from Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s Response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not commit to accepting the truce. He characterized Putin’s proposal as “yet another attempt by Putin to play with human lives,” noting that Russian attacks were still occurring as the ceasefire was scheduled to begin. Zelenskyy emphasized that reports from military commanders indicated ongoing Russian assault operations and artillery fire across several frontline sectors.

Zelenskyy stated, “If a complete ceasefire truly takes hold, Ukraine proposes extending it beyond the Easter day of April 20,” arguing that a mere 30-hour break in fighting would not suffice for building genuine confidence. He referred to a previously rejected 30-day ceasefire proposal by Russia as a more effective duration for potential peace negotiations.

International Context and Negotiations

The announcement of the truce comes amidst diplomatic discussions involving U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently held talks in Paris aimed at finding a resolution to the war in Ukraine. Rubio described the discussions as “productive,” but indicated that the U.S. administration was prepared to disengage from negotiations if they failed to yield substantial outcomes. He remarked, “We need to figure out here, now within a matter of days, whether this is doable in the short term.”

Echoing these sentiments at the White House, President Donald Trump mentioned that the U.S. would soon make a decisive evaluation regarding the negotiations.

Moscow’s Position

In light of U.S. comments, Moscow has signaled a lack of urgency in pursuing a new agreement. Notably, a prior 30-day ceasefire that was intended to pause attacks on energy infrastructure has elapsed, but there has been no confirmation from Putin regarding a resumption of strikes.

Mutual Accusations and Future Steps

Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of failing to adhere to the terms of existing agreements, complicating the path towards peace. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing developments that may influence future negotiations.
