Top MLB Prospects to Watch in 2025
By Eric Karabell
Highlighting Roman Anthony
Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony has kicked off the 2025 season with an impressive performance at Triple-A Worcester. At just under 21 years old, he demonstrated his potential by hitting two home runs in a recent game while also contributing with walks and runs scored. With an earlier display of prowess that included a .344 batting average and a remarkable .982 OPS in 35 games last season, Anthony stands as a top prospect keenly observed by fantasy baseball managers. Notably, he is the only minor leaguer rostered in over 2.5% of ESPN standard leagues.
Prospect Roster Overview
Though Anthony’s roster percentage may appear low, this is largely attributed to the limited roster spots in ESPN standard formats compared to other fantasy leagues where his value is more widely recognized. However, with his potential and the possibility of dominating in the International League, he is certainly worth immediate consideration for any fantasy team.
Other Notable Prospects
In addition to Anthony, several other hitters are standing out in the fantasy landscape, currently rostered in over 1% of ESPN standard leagues:
- Jac Caglianone (1B, Kansas City Royals): At Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Caglianone possesses a powerful hitting profile, though walk and strikeout issues persist. As the Royals seek offensive solutions, anticipate a rapid ascension to the major leagues if he consistently showcases his raw power.
- Jordan Lawlar (SS/3B, Arizona Diamondbacks): Returning to Triple-A Reno, Lawlar has battled injuries but remains a valuable long-term asset. While his power may not overwhelm, his potential to steal bases and hit for average makes him an intriguing option once he secures major league at-bats.
- Coby Mayo (3B, Baltimore Orioles): Following a brief stint in the majors last season, Mayo returns to Triple-A Norfolk where he excelled previously. Expected to reclaim significant playing time soon, his potential for 20 home runs could make him a favorable pick mid-season.
- Marcelo Mayer (SS, Boston Red Sox): Mayer showcases both defensive skills and offensive potential, positioned behind Trevor Story. Should Story’s performance waver, Mayer could earn extensive playing time, contributing both average and modest power.
- Travis Bazzana (2B, Cleveland Guardians): The first pick in the 2024 draft, Bazzana is starting at Double-A Akron and is projected to take a conservative path toward the majors, focusing on development over rush to the big leagues.
- Sam Basallo (C/1B, Baltimore Orioles): Basallo has already shown promise with a strong performance in the minors last season. If he continues to hit, his versatility as a catcher and first baseman may carve out a notable role in Baltimore’s lineup.
- Caleb Durbin (2B/3B, Milwaukee Brewers): After a noteworthy offseason trade, Durbin is set to impress at Triple-A Nashville. His niche for baserunning and speed makes him a potential asset for fantasy managers, especially with a likely path to significant MLB at-bats this season.
- Walker Jenkins (OF, Minnesota Twins): A generational talent alongside Anthony, Jenkins is yet to break into the majors but is considered a significant target for the future, particularly shaping up to be a top dynasty pick for 2026 drafts.
