Corneliu Porumboiu Announces New Film Project in France

Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu has revealed plans to begin production on his first film in over six years. This announcement came during the Visions du Réel film festival, where a retrospective of his work is being held in Nyon, Switzerland.

Project Details

The upcoming film, tentatively titled The Costume, marks a significant shift in Porumboiu’s career as it will be filmed in French and based in France, where he currently resides. The writer-director is actively casting and plans to start filming in September, although funding for the project has not yet been finalized.

Production Team

Producers for the film include France’s MK2 Films, known for their collaboration with Porumboiu on his previous work, The Whistlers, and Lumen, a new company established by Juliette Schrameck, the former managing director of MK2 Films. Porumboiu mentioned that his own production company, 42 Km Film, is not involved in this project and is currently inactive.

Conceptual Approach

While Porumboiu did not elaborate on the film’s narrative, he characterized it as “an adventure,” indicating that it will differ significantly from his earlier works. The specifics of the plot remain undisclosed, leaving much to the imagination as anticipation builds.

Porumboiu gained international acclaim for his unique storytelling style through films primarily set in Romania. Notable titles include:

In addition to fictional works, he directed two acclaimed feature documentaries, The Second Game (2014) and Infinite Football (2018), both of which were showcased at the Berlin Film Festival.
