TAMPA, FLA. — On a day that marked a pivotal moment in women’s college basketball, Paige Bueckers, star guard of the UConn Huskies, achieved the pinnacle of success by winning her first national championship. This victory not only ended a prolonged championship drought for UConn, lasting since 2016, but also showcased Bueckers’ resilience and determination throughout her collegiate career.

In the wake of UConn’s national championship loss in 2022 to South Carolina, legendary alumni Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Breanna Stewart came together in solidarity to support the team and Bueckers in particular. Bird encouraged Bueckers, emphasizing the necessity of overcoming hardships to achieve greatness in sports.
Bueckers’ career at UConn has been marked by both triumph and tribulation. Following her illustrious freshman year, where she garnered multiple national player of the year awards, she faced significant setbacks. Injuries plagued her sophomore and junior years, including missing her entire junior season due to an ACL tear, and yet she persevered through these challenges.

In her final collegiate game, Bueckers delivered a stellar performance, scoring 17 points and seizing six rebounds to secure an 82-59 victory over South Carolina. This championship win not only filled the last gap in Bueckers’ impressive résumé but also represented a much-awaited resurgence for the UConn program.
