Nintendo Switch 2 Set for June 2025 Launch: Key Features Revealed
Nintendo has officially announced that its successor to the popular Nintendo Switch, dubbed the Switch 2, will be launching on June 5, 2025. The flagship title at launch will be Mario Kart World, an exciting open-world installment in the iconic kart racing series.
Hybrid Design and Enhanced Display
Continuing the hybrid concept of its predecessor, the Switch 2 offers impressive portability with the option for both handheld and docked play. Notably, it will feature a larger 7.9-inch screen in handheld mode, elevating gameplay experiences.
However, the device sees a return to an LCD display, similar to the original Switch, moving away from the OLED technology. Despite this, the Switch 2 will offer enhanced visuals with a native resolution of 1080p and support for HDR in compatible games. Players can also expect frame rates of up to 120fps, although this will vary depending on the title.
Audio and Connectivity Improvements
Audio capabilities receive a significant upgrade, featuring improved onboard speakers and support for 3D audio through headphones. A built-in microphone positioned at the top of the console is designed to enhance gaming communication, especially with the introduction of new multiplayer features.
The Switch 2 will include two USB-C ports: one on the top for charging and peripheral connections, and another on the bottom specifically for the new docking station.
Upgraded Joy-Con Controllers
The console will be paired with the newly designed Joy-Con 2 controllers, featuring stronger magnetic connections for easier removal and attachment. These controllers are also equipped with larger SL/SR buttons and thumbsticks to improve gameplay ergonomics.
Additionally, the right Joy-Con 2 will introduce a “C” button for quick access to audio controls, which will be essential for utilizing the new GameChat feature. GameChat will feature noise cancellation technology to ensure clear communication and will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use.
Game Accessories and Expanded Storage
The gaming experience will be further enhanced with the introduction of a new Switch 2 Pro controller, styled similarly to traditional gamepads from competitors like Xbox and PlayStation. Nintendo has also announced a dedicated, wireless GameCube controller for classic titles available via Nintendo Switch Online.
In terms of storage, the Switch 2 will come equipped with 256GB of internal memory, a significant improvement over the original model. However, users will need to transition to the microSD Express format for storage expansion, meaning current microSD cards from the original Switch won’t be directly compatible.
Dock Enhancements and Pricing Information
The revised Switch 2 Dock will enable 4K output while maintaining HDR support, although specific methods for achieving this have not been detailed. Additionally, the dock will feature an integrated fan aimed at improving system efficiency and performance.
Nintendo has set the retail price for the Switch 2 at $450 in the United States, with further pricing details for other regions expected soon.
