Nicolas Cage’s Thrilling Surfing Experience for ‘The Surfer’
Near Encounters and Unexpected Challenges
Nicolas Cage’s preparation for his latest psychological thriller, The Surfer, was not without its risks. The actor nearly had an unexpected meeting with a shark while learning to surf, showcasing the unpredictable nature of the ocean.
About the Film
The Surfer is now screening in theaters and features Cage in the role of a businessman with a desire to reclaim his childhood home in Australia. However, he soon discovers that a gang of local bullies will do anything to prevent him from succeeding, leading to a nightmarish series of events.
Training Intensities
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cage discussed how his surfing lessons proved to be more hazardous than he anticipated. Though he had previous experience with surfing, he remarked, “I have surfed, but every time I’ve attempted surfing, I’ve been pounded to smithereens.”
Waves and Danger
Cage described his attempts to learn surfing down on Sunset Beach, revealing that his instructor provided him with a shortboard initially. He preferred using a longboard, stating, “Look, I want a longboard.” However, even with that adjustment, the ocean presented substantial challenges. He recalled, “I just got pounded and literally got stuck in the rip tide.” He humorously illustrated how his board appeared like a tombstone in the water.
Reflections on Risk
While reflecting on the experience, Cage noted, “I’m climbing up the leash as I’m somersaulting, and I could have died.” His perspective on surfing has changed, especially now that he has a young child, leading him to question whether he would venture into the waves again.
Cage’s Character Journey
In The Surfer, Cage’s character faces a parallel struggle, beset by bullies who prevent him from purchasing or enjoying the surf at his former home. Despite the more daunting aspects of surfing, Cage remains open to retrying the sport. He humorously shares, “The goal is to retire, surf, drink red wine, and eat spaghetti.”
