China’s Box Office Weekly Update: March 28-30, 2025
Top Performers of the Weekend
The Chinese box office concluded the weekend of March 28–30, 2025, relatively quietly, with the animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 from Cococartoon leading the charts once more. The film grossed RMB 62.2 million (approximately $8.6 million) during this period, bringing its total earnings to an impressive $2.09 billion, as reported by Artisan Gateway. This total solidifies its position as the highest-grossing film of the year.
In second place was the action thriller A Working Man, starring Jason Statham and distributed by Black Bear. The film debuted with earnings of $3.3 million, making it the strongest new release for the weekend despite a modest showing.
Other Releases and Rankings
Hanna Pictures’ The River of Fury, which is a crime thriller directed by Feng Yongqin, fell to third place, earning $2.1 million and accumulating a total of $5.4 million over its two-week run. The plot revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a woman tied to a series of murders.
Maintaining a steady presence in the fourth spot, Detective Chinatown 1900 from One Production earned $1.8 million this weekend. This film continues to showcase its popularity with a total gross of $494.7 million after nine weeks in the top rankings.
Completing the top five is New Life, a drama from Lian Ray Pictures that earned $0.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $3.2 million. Directed by Dong Hongjie, the film tells the story of a lonely worker who forms a bond with a stray dog.
Overall Box Office Performance
Overall, the total box office revenue for the weekend reached $20.8 million. This brings the year-to-date total for China’s 2025 box office to $3.39 billion, reflecting a significant increase of 50.4% compared to the same period in 2024. Although there were no major breakout films this weekend, the market remains resilient, bolstered by the sustained popularity of domestic hits such as Ne Zha 2. However, the current box office figures stand in stark contrast to the record-setting numbers achieved during the Lunar New Year holiday.
