Earthquake Details
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred early Saturday morning, local time, in the vicinity of Papua New Guinea, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The seismic event was located approximately 194 kilometers southeast of Kimbe, the provincial capital of West New Britain.
Aftershocks and Tsunami Warning
Following the quake, several aftershocks were recorded, with one measuring 5.3 in magnitude, according to subsequent data from the USGS.
In the immediate aftermath, the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert, cautioning that “hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts.” Fortunately, this tsunami threat has since been lifted, alleviating concerns over potential coastal impacts.
