Lionel Messi on the Evolving Landscape of Major League Soccer
Inter Miami CF’s Lionel Messi has expressed his belief that the level of competition in Major League Soccer (MLS) is steadily improving, particularly with the influx of young international talent. In a recent interview, Messi described this current season as his most challenging since joining the team in 2023.
Competitive Nature of MLS
Messi stated, “It’s a very physical league, with many young players that are addressing weaknesses with physical attributes.” He emphasized the demanding pace of the matches, noting, “It may not seem like it, but teams run a lot. There are many back-and-forth matches, especially in the final minutes with open spaces.” He believes the overall quality of the teams is on the rise.
Inter Miami’s Fresh Signings
In preparation for the 2025 season, Inter Miami has made significant roster enhancements, bringing in young players from South America to complement its existing roster, which already features stars like Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets.
League-Wide Developments
Other MLS teams have also strengthened their line-ups, including San Diego FC, which signed Hirving Lozano, and Charlotte FC, which welcomed Wilfried Zaha. Additionally, Atlanta United FC has added Emmanuel Latte Lath and Miguel Almirón.
Challenges Within the League
Despite these advancements, Messi pointed out that certain roster restrictions could hinder the league’s continued growth. “I think if the league allowed more players to be brought in, because there are many restrictions, they would grow much more,” Messi remarked. The current MLS framework permits only three designated players and enforces a strict salary cap, which can limit club strategies during transfer windows.
Former Inter Miami head coach Gerardo Martino echoed similar concerns, suggesting that stricter roster rules give an advantage to teams from leagues with looser regulations, such as Mexican clubs.
Current Standing and Upcoming Matches
As of now, Inter Miami holds the fourth position in the Eastern Conference and has recently made history by advancing to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup after defeating LAFC 3-2 on aggregate. Messi expressed his satisfaction with life in the U.S. and remarked on the exciting journey in the league despite the challenges of extensive travel.
“The truth is, I like being here. There’s a lot of traveling, though…But it’s a league to enjoy,” he noted.
Looking Ahead
Inter Miami is set to compete against the Columbus Crew on Saturday in Ohio, followed by a trip to Canada for the first leg of their semifinal series against the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 24.
