Corey Feldman Claims Johnny Depp Influenced His Casting in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’

In a recent episode of Billy Corgan’s “Magnificent Others” podcast, actor Corey Feldman made significant claims regarding his experience surrounding the film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Feldman stated that he was originally cast in the role of Arnie, the disabled brother of Johnny Depp’s character, Gilbert. Ultimately, Leonardo DiCaprio was awarded the role, which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Revelations on Casting

Feldman disclosed, “I was actually cast to play Leonardo DiCaprio’s role. I never saw the film because I’m still bitter. Bitter leaf in that one. But yes, I was originally cast for that role.” When asked if someone had pushed him out, he pointed fingers at Johnny Depp, revealing that Depp allegedly expressed concerns to the producers about Feldman’s past.

Feldman’s Claims

Feldman claimed, “Johnny Depp… was cast after I was, and apparently whispered into the producers’ ear that he wasn’t fond of me and thought — he said that I was a junkie and that he didn’t work with junkies. And this is the first time I’ve ever telling this story, so I’m sure I’m gonna get hung by this one.”

Feldman’s Background

At the time, Feldman was already a recognizable figure in Hollywood, known for roles in hits like The Goonies and Stand By Me. He emphasized that he was sober at the time of casting, stating, “I had just gotten sober. I had just gotten out of rehab. I had turned my life around… as you can imagine, there was a bit of a thorn in the side on that one.”

The Impact of the Role

Feldman reflected on the ramifications of losing the role to DiCaprio, noting, “There was a bitter tea there. But that said, you don’t hang on those, you get past ’em.” DiCaprio’s performance in the film is often regarded as a milestone in his career.

Looking Ahead

Further, Feldman shared that this was not the first instance he lost a role to DiCaprio. He mentions being part of discussions for the iconic film Titanic but clarified, “I know that I was in the contention somewhere.”
