Jason Momoa Set to Play Lobo in DC’s ‘Supergirl: World of Tomorrow’
Jason Momoa’s desire to portray the comic book character Lobo has become a reality, prompting excitement among fans. In a recent update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), James Gunn, co-chair of DC Studios, shared a significant text exchange with Momoa that highlights the actor’s enthusiasm for taking on the role.
The Text Exchange
When Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed to lead Warner Bros. superhero films in late 2022, Momoa expressed his eagerness with a straightforward message: “Fucking Lobo.” In response, Gunn revealed his long-held belief that Momoa was the perfect fit for the character, saying, “Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years. No lie.”
Momoa’s Role in ‘Supergirl: World of Tomorrow’
Momoa is set to embody Lobo in the highly anticipated Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, which is currently in production. This film will mark the second entry in Gunn and Safran’s reimagined DC Universe, following the release of Superman, starring David Corenswet as the titular character and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl also features Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and Matthias Schoenaerts as the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hill.
Confirmation of Casting
Momoa’s casting as Lobo was officially announced in December 2022. He later took to Instagram to share his excitement about taking on a character he has long admired. In a previous interview with Fandango, he reflected on his love for comic books and how Lobo was always his favorite character.
His Passion for the Character
In the interview, Momoa stated, “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.” He expressed his enthusiasm succinctly: “If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah.”
Transitioning from Aquaman to Lobo
Previously known for his portrayal of Aquaman in the earlier DC Universe, Momoa has starred in two solo films and featured in Justice League. His tenure as Aquaman concluded following the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. However, Momoa has been vocal about his desire for a new character in the revamped DC landscape spearheaded by Gunn and Safran.
Looking Forward
Discussing the new leadership at DC, Momoa expressed excitement about future projects during a 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight, stating, “One of my dreams come true will be happening under their watch. So, stay tuned!”
