Jack Black Reflects on Missed ‘SNL’ Audition
Audition Concept Revealed
In a candid conversation with Amy Poehler on her podcast, “Good Hang,” Jack Black disclosed that he had an innovative idea for a potential audition for the iconic late-night show, Saturday Night Live. However, he ultimately chose not to pursue it.
The Unleashed Superhero Concept
Black elaborated on his creative vision, expressing, “I had an idea in mind that I never went and followed through with.” His concept involved a unique take on the classic Marvel superhero, the Hulk. He envisaged a performance art piece intertwined with humorous elements.
Describing his act, he noted, “I was gonna come in as the Hulk and just jump around and do this weird slow-motion kind of performance art dance where I would crush things with my foot and then do a mimed, the earth is cracking.”
Preparation and Decision
Despite putting some effort into his preparation, Black confided that he struggled with self-doubt regarding the audition. He stated, “I practiced it in the mirror in my living room a few times,” but ultimately felt that he “was not gonna get in” and decided against auditioning.
Schedule Concerns and Farewell to ‘SNL’
In response to Poehler’s encouragement that he could have been a viable cast member, Black expressed concerns about the rigorous demands of the SNL schedule. “I don’t think I could handle it week-in and week-out,” he explained. He humorously remarked, “Once every 20 years is more my speed for that gig.”
