Economic Contributions Since 2020

Netflix has made substantial investments in production hubs across Wales, generating an impressive £200 million (approximately $265 million) for the U.K. economy since 2020, as highlighted in a recent report by the streaming platform in collaboration with Creative Wales.

Highlighting Local Production: ‘Havoc’

Among its notable projects, Netflix is set to release the action thriller “Havoc” directed by Gareth Evans and starring Tom Hardy. This film is particularly significant as it is the largest feature ever filmed entirely in Wales, symbolizing Netflix’s commitment to local storytelling.

The Value of Welsh Creativity

Anna Mallet, Netflix’s VP of production for the U.K., expressed pride in the platform’s association with Wales, stating, “From ‘Sex Education’ to ‘The Crown,’ and now to ‘Havoc,’ some of our most beloved titles were filmed or produced in Wales. Blessed with incredible creative talent and beautiful natural landscapes, Wales is an amazing place to make entertainment.”

Broadening the Economic Impact

According to the recent report, Netflix’s productions have positively impacted over 500 Welsh businesses since 2020. Analysis indicates that for every £1 spent by Netflix in Wales, 58 pence (around 76 cents) is directed towards the television and film sectors, while the remaining funds enhance various other industries, including food, hospitality, and creative arts. Furthermore, each £1 invested is said to generate an additional 80 pence ($1.06) throughout the local supply chain.

Fostering Talent and Apprenticeships

The investment in Welsh productions has also paved the way for talent development. Notably, the series “Sex Education” has created more than 60 trainee and apprenticeship opportunities, many of which have transitioned into permanent roles within the industry. In addition, Netflix’s “Ignite Your Creativity” initiative, launched in partnership with the National Youth Theatre, has engaged over 350 young individuals in various workshops across regions such as Newport, Cardiff, and Torfaen.

Embracing Welsh Culture

Netflix has taken steps to celebrate the Welsh cultural landscape by incorporating Welsh-language subtitles for titles such as Ryan Reynolds’ “The Adam Project” and “Red Notice“. In a milestone move, the platform has also licensed its first Welsh-language series, “Dal Y Mellt,” in 2023.

The Vision for the Future

Director Gareth Evans, who hails from Wales, remarked on the significance of creating a film like “Havoc” in his homeland, stating that it has been exhilarating to witness the positive impact of large-scale productions on local businesses while also showcasing Welsh talent.

Joedi Langley, interim head of Creative Wales, echoed these sentiments, expressing eagerness for ongoing collaboration with Netflix to maximize Wales’s potential as a filming destination for both local and international projects.
