Greenland’s Prime Minister Responds to U.S. Remarks on Territorial Status

LYNGBY, Denmark – In his inaugural statements as Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed strong objections to recent comments made by U.S. officials regarding Greenland, asserting that the island “will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by just anyone.”

U.S. Interest Comes Under Scrutiny

Nielsen’s remarks were made during a press briefing held alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. This discourse comes in light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.

“The talks from the United States have not been respectful,” Nielsen stated, underscoring that the language used in discussions about Greenland’s future has been problematic.

Coalition Government’s Stance

Political factions in Greenland, which is pursuing greater independence from Denmark, have united to form a new coalition government in response to the perceived threats from the U.S.

According to Nielsen, this newly formed coalition will bolster Greenland’s position as a self-governing entity, especially in light of the ongoing international dialogue regarding its status.

Focus on Cooperation and Investment

During Nielsen’s three-day visit, which commenced on Saturday, the emphasis was placed on future cooperation between Greenland and Denmark. Prime Minister Frederiksen expressed Denmark’s commitment to investing in Greenland’s society, stating, “Denmark has the will to invest in the Greenlandic society…. We also have that because we are part of the Danish commonwealth with each other.”

Upcoming Royal Engagements

Nielsen’s itinerary includes a meeting with King Frederik X, following which he will return to Greenland with Frederiksen for a royal visit, further emphasizing the strong ties between the two nations.

Potential Meeting with U.S. President

When asked about a possible meeting with President Trump, Frederiksen responded, “We always want to meet with the American president…. But I think we have been very, very clear in what is the approach to all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
