Understanding REAL ID Requirements for Air Travel
Travelers departing from U.S. airports must be prepared to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an alternative form of compliant identification starting May 7, 2024. Compliance is crucial for passing through airport security without delays.
What Is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a federal initiative designed to enhance security at airports and government facilities. Originally set to launch in 2008, the implementation of REAL ID has faced numerous delays, leaving many travelers confused about the requirements and deadlines.
Currently, approximately 56% of driver’s licenses and IDs in circulation are compliant with the REAL ID standards. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that this figure will rise to 61.2% by the May deadline. However, a significant portion of travelers—around 81%—are reportedly already using REAL IDs or other approved identification.
Deadlines and Compliance
As the deadline approaches, travelers are urged to ensure their identification is compliant to avoid potential issues at airport security. Without a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, travelers might experience delays, increased screening, or even denial of access to security checkpoints.
Preparing to Obtain Your REAL ID
Long Wait Times at DMVs
With the impending deadline, many Department of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) across the country are experiencing overwhelming demand for REAL ID applications. Some states, including New York and California, have extended their hours and created special events to facilitate the process.
- New York DMVs are now open late on Thursdays and are processing applications at the New York International Auto Show from April 18 to April 27.
- California has designated certain DMVs to open earlier for REAL ID appointments four days a week.
- Illinois has established a “Real ID Supercenter” for walk-in applications.
Strategies for Last-Minute Appointments
Aixa Diaz, a spokesperson for AAA, suggests that travelers keep refreshing DMV appointment websites for cancellations that may open up slots unexpectedly. However, it’s essential to note that TSA will not accept temporary paper IDs as valid identification at security checkpoints.
Alternatives to REAL ID
For those unable to secure a REAL ID in time, a valid U.S. passport serves as an acceptable form of identification at TSA checkpoints. Travelers should keep this option in mind to ensure a smoother airport experience post-deadline.
Expected Delays Without Compliant Identification
Travelers who arrive at airports with non-compliant identification can expect to experience longer wait times and increased scrutiny. The TSA clearly states that non-compliant ID holders might not gain entry to security without an alternative, like a passport.
