Bill Hader’s Hilarious Tale of Getting Fired from a Movie Theater
Before becoming a celebrated comedian and Emmy-winning actor known for his roles on “Saturday Night Live” and “Barry,” Bill Hader had a distinctly unglamorous job at a movie theater. In a recent appearance on Netflix’s “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney,” Hader recounted a memorable incident that led to his dismissal from that job.
The Incident That Changed Everything
Hader remembered a particularly challenging day at the theater involving a rowdy group of sorority girls. With “Titanic” set to premiere soon, these young women had booked a private screening and were openly mocking Hader’s appearance, even likening him to Charles Manson, a comparison he admitted was somewhat accurate at the time.
As Hader politely requested the group to move from the entrance, their refusal prompted him to take revenge in a rather unconventional manner. “When they went in, as I tore the tickets, I was like, ‘Enjoy the movie. The boat sinks at the end. Leo dies,’” he recalled, relishing the moment as they reacted with disbelief. Hader added, “They were like, ‘No, he doesn’t,’ and I responded, ‘Yeah, you think he’s asleep. But he’s frozen.’”
Facing the Consequences
The humorous backlash of his actions did not go unnoticed by management. According to Hader, the theater manager approached him with a mix of amusement and regret, stating, “Hey, Bill. I have to fire you.” Despite the lighthearted nature of the situation, the manager struggled to meet Hader’s gaze, indicating the mix of reprimand and humor surrounding the event.
The Ongoing Debate Over Titanic’s Ending
Hader’s quip about the fate of DiCaprio’s character, Jack, touches on a long-standing debate among fans. Since the film’s release in 1997, discussions regarding whether both Jack and Rose could have survived by sharing space on the door have persisted. Director James Cameron even conducted a “scientific study” in 2022 to address this contentious topic.
In Cameron’s analysis, he utilized stunt performers who closely matched Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s physiques to test the survival possibilities in icy waters. He concluded that only one of the characters could have survived, stating, “There was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive.”
