Leaked Sizzle Reel of Kung Fury 2: An Action-Packed Preview

In a surprising turn of events, a vibrant and high-energy sizzle reel for Kung Fury 2 has surfaced online. This action-comedy sequel features an all-star cast, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Fassbender, and David Hasselhoff. The project has been stalled since 2020 due to a series of legal complications.

Overview of the Leaked Footage

The leak comprises a ten-minute promotional video that is described as “outrageously over-the-top.” In the clip, Schwarzenegger assumes the role of a cigar-smoking, shotgun-wielding U.S. president determined to combat nefarious forces, while Fassbender portrays a rebellious FBI agent sporting a mullet. This character amusingly explains how to prepare a “justice omelette.” Meanwhile, Hasselhoff is depicted in a flamboyant red leather jumpsuit, lovingly holding puppies and transforming into an outrageous 1980s sports car named the Hoff 9000.

A Wild Plot and Unique Characters

The narrative seems to center around the Thunder Cops, an eclectic ensemble of humans, dinosaurs, and half-human, half-dinosaur characters, leading a mission to clean up the streets of 1985 Miami. This quirky squad is helmed by the martial arts hero Kung Fury, played by writer-director David Sandberg. Their mission is complicated by the emergence of Adolf Hitler, described humorously as “the worst criminal of all time.”

Producer Insights

Confirmed by Variety, the authenticity of the sizzle reel has been acknowledged by the filmmakers. Sandberg expressed his feelings regarding the leak, stating, “This was an internal promo video that was never supposed to be seen by the public. I feel bad because it contains a bunch of plot points and temp VFX. I hope at least people can see the passion that we poured into the movie. The world deserves to see it as it was meant to be seen.” He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the film, which has faced prolonged delays, gets the opportunity it deserves.

Background of Kung Fury 2

Kung Fury 2 was initially announced in 2015 and filmed in 2019, intended to follow the viral short film Kung Fury. This original project, which gained fame on YouTube thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, paid homage to 1980s martial arts films and buddy cop genres.

The sequel was largely shot in Sweden using green screen technology and boasted a budget exceeding $34 million. The film aimed to amplify the eccentric qualities of its predecessor while introducing A-list talent. Highlights from the original short include a time-traveling Kung Fury battling Adolf Hitler, aided by female viking warriors and a police officer named Triceracop.

Production Delays and Legal Issues

Filming for Kung Fury 2 wrapped in late 2019 after locations in Bulgaria and Germany were utilized. However, post-production efforts ceased in 2020 amid a lawsuit involving the film’s Chinese investors, Creasun Entertainment. A legal dispute arose when Creasun allegedly failed to fulfill a $10 million funding agreement, stalling the production even further. While Creasun claimed the lawsuit was unwarranted, asserting their contractual rights over the film, progress has reportedly been minimal since.

Timing of the Leak

Interestingly, the leak coincides with the Cannes Film Festival, where the original Kung Fury short had made its premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar back in 2015. This adds a layer of intrigue as fans express their anticipation for the delayed sequel.
