Exploring the TCL QM6K Television: Features and Performance Overview

Important Setup Considerations

Before enjoying your TCL QM6K television, it’s essential to review the privacy terms, as you’ll need to share some personal information. You may also prefer to turn off the onboard microphone of the TV for enhanced privacy, instead using the new central key of the angular remote to access Google Assistant.

Remote Design and Functionality

The remote control is fitted with backlighting and a user-friendly layout. However, some design choices, such as relocating the mute button to the top-left corner, may take a little adjusting to.

Picture Settings Made Simple

Setting up the picture quality on the QM6K is a straightforward process. Starting with the Filmmaker Mode is advisable, as it provides balanced settings while disabling distracting features like motion smoothing. To refine the picture further, consider adjusting the Adaptive Brightness under the Eye Health settings.

In Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) mode, it’s possible to enhance your viewing experience by slightly decreasing the contrast and significantly increasing the backlight. This flexibility allows for better visibility, particularly in modes like Standard, which operate under Eco mode when the backlight is set below midpoint. During High Dynamic Range (HDR) viewing, the backlight is ideally adjusted to its maximum setting.

For content featuring Dolby Vision, the visually dynamic “Dolby Vision Bright” setting is generally preferred, although motion smoothing should be turned off. The QM6K also offers a workable Dolby Vision Dark mode, which proves effective for darker scenes despite appearing somewhat muted.

Exceptional Performance: A Balanced Experience

The QM6K television delivers a commendable performance that stands out among its competitors. While TCL reports a 53% increase in brightness compared to its predecessor, the model doesn’t reach the 1,000 nit threshold many high-end models do. For instance, Hisense’s U7N outshines it with higher brightness levels. Nonetheless, the QM6K effectively brightens HDR elements like sunlight and explosions, achieving a satisfactory viewing experience.

Contrast is another critical metric for evaluating television performance. The QM6K excels with its impressive black levels, presenting a visual experience that rivals higher-end QLED models. While it doesn’t achieve the same darkness seen in premium models like Sony’s Bravia 9 or OLED televisions, it offers a commendable performance in low-light conditions, providing rich depth in various picture details.
