Disney Welcomes Tamotsu Hiiro as New Managing Director in Japan
The Walt Disney Company has announced a significant leadership transition in Japan with the appointment of Tamotsu Hiiro as the new managing director. This decision marks the beginning of a new chapter for Disney’s operations in one of its most pivotal markets.
Background on Tamotsu Hiiro
Tamotsu Hiiro brings over 35 years of experience in corporate leadership to his new role. He joins Disney after serving as the president and CEO of McDonald’s Japan. Prior to his tenure there, Hiiro dedicated three decades to Johnson & Johnson, where he eventually held the position of president for the Japan division.
Transition of Leadership
Hiiro’s appointment comes as Carol Choi concludes her five-year leadership in Japan. Choi played a crucial role in solidifying Disney+ as a competitive streaming service in Japan and was instrumental in leading several successful releases, such as “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Inside Out 2.” While stepping down as managing director, she will continue to serve as the executive vice president for APAC studios, focusing on original content strategy and integrated marketing.
Future Outlook
Luke Kang, the president of Disney’s Asia Pacific operations, expressed enthusiasm about Hiiro’s capabilities. “We are thrilled to have such an accomplished leader like Hiiro-san take the helm of our Japan business, as we continue to deepen our consumer connections in this incredibly important market,” he stated. Kang believes that Hiiro’s extensive market knowledge and local network will elevate Disney’s entertainment business in Japan.
Hiiro’s Vision for Disney in Japan
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Hiiro stated, “I am delighted to join such an iconic and respected global company like The Walt Disney Company, which has generations of stories and characters that millions of Japanese consumers love.” He recognizes Japan’s growing significance as a consumer and content hub and looks forward to contributing to Disney’s ongoing momentum in the country.
Company Legacy and Operations in Japan
Disney’s established presence in Japan dates back to 1959, when it initiated its first commercial operations. Today, The Walt Disney Company operates across various sectors, including studios, streaming (Disney+), theme parks, gaming, consumer products, and retail through Disney store operations.
Leadership Stability
Kang mentioned that Hiiro will benefit from the robust foundation laid by Choi and emphasized her lasting impact on Disney’s business in Japan. He noted that she will remain involved with key strategic initiatives within the Asia Pacific region.
