Health Challenges Prompt Retirement

Chaz Lucius, a former first-round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets, has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey at the age of 21. This decision comes after he was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a hereditary condition that affects connective tissue in the body.

Career Overview and Recent Performance

Lucius, who played as a center for the Manitoba Moose, the Jets’ AHL affiliate, had a promising career ahead of him. Over the past season, he played in 25 games and recorded nine points, but his participation was curtailed by ongoing injury issues.

Throughout his career, Lucius faced significant challenges relating to joint injuries, prompting him to seek medical advice, which ultimately led to the diagnosis of EDS. “I thought I was just unlucky. With this diagnosis of EDS, I now realize that my body could not handle the physical nature of playing hockey,” he shared in a statement, emphasizing the impact of his condition on his athletic abilities.

The Winnipeg Jets organization expressed their full support for Lucius’s decision, recognizing the health risks associated with continuing to play. In their statement, they noted, “After much discussion and consultation with Chaz, his representatives, and medical professionals, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club fully supports his difficult decision to retire.” The team acknowledged the struggles he faced with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and the risks of injury associated with playing at a professional level.

Future Advocacy and Personal Reflections

In light of his retirement, Lucius intends to become an advocate for individuals living with EDS. He expressed gratitude towards the Jets organization, particularly Mike Keane from the player development staff, for their support during this challenging time. “I feel blessed to have experienced all that hockey gave me over the years, even though I am crushed that I cannot continue to pursue my dream of playing in the NHL,” Lucius remarked, acknowledging the emotional toll of his decision.
