Brazilian Football Federation Takes Action Against Racial Abuse in Youth Match
The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) announced its intention to file a formal complaint with the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) following an incident involving racial abuse directed at a Palmeiras under-20 player, Luighi. The incident occurred during a match against Cerro Porteno’s U20 team in Paraguay.
Details of the Incident
During the CONMEBOL Libertadores U20 match, which saw Palmeiras secure a 3-0 victory, Luighi reported that he was a target of racial slurs. An individual in the stands was observed making monkey gestures aimed at the player and his teammates. Luighi brought this to the referee’s attention shortly after the incident was captured on camera.
The 18-year-old striker, who previously represented Brazil at the U17 World Cup, was visibly affected and was seen in tears after being substituted shortly thereafter.
Reaction from Luighi
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Luighi expressed his pain, stating, “It hurts the soul. And it is the same pain that all black people have felt throughout history, because things evolve, but they are never 100% resolved.” He emphasized the need for society to address such issues decisively.
Moreover, Luighi highlighted the ongoing struggle against racism in football, noting, “Today’s episode leaves scars and needs to be seen for what it really is: A crime.”
CBF’s Response
The CBF responded promptly, calling upon its legal department to compile a report for CONMEBOL. The federation’s president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, condemned the incident by stating, “It is shocking to see scenes like these. Racism is a criminal offence and must be combated by everyone. I know how much pain Luighi has suffered. Enough of racists in football.”
Luighi’s Career Progression
Luighi began with Palmeiras’ first team in June 2024, accumulating nine league appearances and scoring once. His career progression is closely followed by fans and analysts alike, particularly in light of this recent adversity.
