7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southeast Asia

LONDON – A significant earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.7 has impacted Southeast Asia, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Epicenter and Impact

The quake’s epicenter was located near Mandalay, Myanmar, but its effects were felt strongly across neighboring regions, particularly in Thailand. Reports from the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (NIEM) in Thailand indicate that at least one individual has lost their life, with approximately 50 others sustaining injuries following the collapse of a construction site in Bangkok during the tremor.

Construction Site Collapse and Rescue Operations

NIEM reported that there were around 320 workers present at the construction site when the building fell. Current estimates suggest that up to 70 workers remain unaccounted for, with at least 20 individuals trapped in the elevator shaft. Emergency workers are anticipating that the death toll may increase as rescue efforts proceed.

As the earthquake struck at roughly 1:30 p.m., evacuation protocols were activated and alarms triggered across Bangkok, leading to a mass exodus from buildings.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses recounted feelings of confusion and fear. One British tourist in Bangkok described the experience saying, “We were under the main Sukhumvit railway station and thought a train had crashed on the initial tremor, but then as it continued, people started to run outside and the hotels were evacuated.” This sentiment was echoed by many who took to the streets in panic.

Public Safety Measures and Transportation Disruptions

In the aftermath, the Royal Thai Police are actively coordinating evacuation efforts, assisting individuals in moving to safer locations away from potential hazards. Furthermore, both the BTS elevated train system and the MRT, which operates underground, have temporarily suspended services in response to the earthquake’s aftermath.

Visual Documentation of the Event

Continuing Coverage and Updates

As rescue operations continue, the situation remains fluid. Authorities are working diligently to account for missing individuals and stabilize affected areas. Residents and those in the vicinity are urged to stay alert and follow safety protocols. This is a developing story with ongoing updates expected.
