Sony Alters Release Schedule for Upcoming Films
In recent updates to its film lineup, Sony has made significant changes to the release calendar, notably removing the adaptation of the iconic video game series, Street Fighter, from its planned debut on March 20, 2026. Additionally, the release of Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller, which has been retitled from Beneath the Storm to Shiver, has been postponed from August 2025 to July 2026.
About the Street Fighter Adaptation
The upcoming Street Fighter film is a collaborative effort between Capcom, the original Japanese video game developer, and Legendary Entertainment, which acquired the film and television rights to the series in 2023. While details regarding the plot, cast, and creative team remain undisclosed, the project continues to generate anticipation among fans.
Historical Context
This is not the first time Street Fighter has been adapted for the big screen. The franchise saw its initial film adaptation in 1994, produced by Universal and featuring a star-studded cast that included Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia. A subsequent adaptation, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, was released by 20th Century Fox in 2009, starring Kristin Kreuk. Unfortunately, both adaptations failed to achieve critical or commercial success.
Release Shift for Shiver
Initially scheduled for release on August 1, 2025, Shiver will now premiere just under a year later to align more closely with the summer blockbuster season. The film features a cast including Phoebe Dynevor, known for her roles in Bridgerton and Fair Play, Whitney Peak from Gossip Girl and Hocus Pocus 2, and Djimon Hounsou, who has appeared in films such as Rebel Moon and A Quiet Place: Day One. Producers for the film include Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.
Tommy Wirkola’s Credentials
Director Tommy Wirkola has built a varied filmography, with notable works including Spermageddon, Violent Night, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. His experience adds an intriguing dynamic to the upcoming release of Shiver.
