Jack Draper Upsets Alcaraz, Advances to BNP Paribas Open Final

In a stunning performance at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, Jack Draper emerged victorious over two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. This win propels Draper into the final match, where he will face fellow competitor Holger Rune.

Match Highlights

The 13th seed, Draper, ended Alcaraz’s impressive 16-match winning streak in this esteemed ATP Masters 1000 tournament. Draper, a 23-year-old left-hander from England, is set to achieve his first top 10 ranking on the ATP Tour come Monday. He already boasts titles from Vienna and Stuttgart, marking a successful year.

Despite his victory, Draper holds a 2-3 record against Alcaraz, emphasizing the competitiveness of their rivalry.

Rune’s Path to the Final

On the path to the final, Rune, seeded 12th, secured his place by defeating fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, with a score of 7-6, 6-4. This victory marks Rune’s 150th win at the tour level and ends a streak of seven consecutive losses in semifinal appearances. Rune now holds a 2-2 record against Medvedev, showcasing his growth and competitive spirit.

“It means everything,” Rune expressed. “The job is not over yet, but it feels amazing. Playing Daniil is one of the toughest challenges for me on tour. I managed to beat him the first time [we played], but we know each other well. I obviously had the right tactics, but it was still so difficult because he puts in great effort and is super solid. So, I’m very proud of myself.”

Looking Ahead

If Rune triumphs in the final, he will continue to build on his four ATP Tour titles, the most notable being his victory at the 2022 Paris Masters. For Alcaraz, the second seed, this loss denies him the opportunity to become the youngest player to win three consecutive singles titles at the ATP Tour, a feat only attempted by a select few at the BNP Paribas Open.

Medvedev, the last year’s finalist and undefeated in 2023, continues to seek another title as he looks to return to form following his defeat.
